The Travels of Mariko Horo (2006) by Tamiko Thiel is an interctive 3D virtual reality installation, with original music by Ping Jin. For the first time ever, this work is being sold as wearable art in collaboration with Bobblehaus.
Mariko Horo, Mariko the Wanderer, journeys westward from Japan, traveling through time and space in search of the Western Paradise of Buddhist mythology, the "Isles of the Blest" floating in the Western Seas. Arriving in Venice, she holds the islands of the Laguna for the entire Western World, and encapsulates her impressions in a 3D "Horo-gram."
This reverse Marco Polo journey conflates Byzntine icons and Dante's cosmology with Buddhist cosmological structures. It is inspired by the pre-modern Japanese artists whi invented the West in their imagination, and by the "hidden Christians" of Japan who secretly worshipped the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy Kannon as the Christian Madonna.
