G-Dragon’s military homecoming is unlike any other
After 20 months of military service in the South Korean army, K-pop legend and fashion icon G-Dragon is back. Unlike most young South Korean men, who conclude their mandatory conscription terms by quietly returning to school or work, G-Dragon’s homecoming on October 26, 2019 made headlines. What’s more, he wasn’t just back in business: he was ready to be a mogul. Since his return, G-Dragon has promised not only new music, but two major collaborations between his fashion brand PEACEMINUSONE and Nike and Converse.
What’s more, G-Dragon wasn’t just back in business: he was ready to be a mogul.
In October of 2016, G-Dragon founded his personal fashion brand, PEACEMINUSONE. The brand was a success from the moment it launched, and featured clothing, accessories, digital products, and even furniture in its lineup.
This year, Nike officially confirmed the collaborative Nike Air Force 1 Low x PEACEMINUSONE. At the same time, G-Dragon released the behind-the-scenes teasers and named this expressive pair of sneakers “Para-Noise.”
Truly resonant of its namesake, this low-cut Air Force rocks a classic black, lustrous leather with white Swoosh branding and white “Air Force 1” soles. A few aimlessly black-painted strokes highlight the messy creative process in G-Dragon’s teaser video. Signature daisy embroidery on the tongue with customized pins of PEACEMINUSONE’s logo in the eyelets complete the look. “Para-Noise,” styled with a pair of clean white laces, embodies both contrast and harmony. “Every since I came across hip hop as a kid, AF1 has held a meaning greater than just shoes,” says G-Dragon. He told Nike that he was trying to convey “a sense of optimism,” encouraging youth around the world to merge through creative expression and “a free exchange of ideas.”
Since his early debut in 2006, G-Dragon has been a force of influence in youth and pop culture through his expressive and progressive creativity. For him, art and fashion are important expressions of self, liberated from limitations, requirements, and qualifications.
G-Dragon has also released a Korea-exclusive version that features a bold red Swoosh logo; this sold out quickly on PEACEMINUSONE’s online store. According to nike.com the Nike Air Force 1 Para-noise will launch globally on November 23, online and in selected retail stores.
In addition to this Nike Air Force 1, PEACEMINUSONE is also collaborating with Converse on the emblematic Chuck 70. Similar to the design of “Para-Noise”, this pair of Chuck 70s features a surface with dark fabric, classic daisy motif embroidery, and randomly brushed white sole. There has been no official confirmation on this piece yet; however it would not be a surprise if another of G-Dragon’s favorite silhouettes is released after the success of “Para-Noise”.
